Why I like being an alternative and same-sex wedding photographer.
I will never forget that Friday, in March 2009.
I knew it was happening but I never suspected it was going to be me. We were friends or so I thought, but her look was firm, distant and she worked in HR so I suspected it was not going to end well.
I always loved unusual, alternative people, my best friend at uni was gay and he was so much fun.
His creativity was exceptional, he was my best friend, my brother, and I cried so many tears on his shoulder. He was there for me in my darkest time ever in London, a city full of possibilities and so lethal if you are broken and lonely.
Thanks to Nat, a well established Thai fashion photographer, I learned to love same-sex couples, their dynamics and the way they are so strong, determined to be unique, defined and offbeat.
Deep down I am too much of an artist, always seeking freedom of expression, looking for the unusual, attracted to anything and alternative.
Being a wedding photographer was certainly not on my agenda.
By simply starting to follow my heart, what I really liked and who I liked, I became a freelance wedding photographer dedicated to those unique, alternative and stylish couples I really love. That’s when I came across a Rock ‘n’ roll Brides a new fresh approach to weddings. No more cheesy pictures!
The time had come to be more inventive, different, unique, and creative. Yes, I liked what was happening, a big change at last.
I started working with same-sex couples and I loved it. The bond was deep and very real.
I would listen to them and they trusted me.
Their weddings are not following any pre-designed pattern. They do what inspires them and are able to express themselves freely without feeling too much of the family pressure.
What is there not to like in this? I was in my element.
No more Cinderella weddings, no more polyester chair cover.
No more summer and spring only weddings. Same-sex couples tend to get married despite the time of year.
So I now cover weddings all year around and I love it.
